Note that the LIFT ON OFF light (the upper left button) is off, the Sample indicator (just above the display showing "standby") is "down" and the LOCK light is on. This indicates that a sample is in the magnet and the deuterium lock is operating.  The "standby" indication on the display indicates that no value setting operation is in progress.

The LIFT ON OFF light must be toggled on before placing a sample in the bore.
